The first topographic map of the Vernagtferner is based on a photogrammetric survey, i.e. the geometric evaluation of photos, by Sebastian Finsterwalder from 1889. Since 1979, orthophoto maps based on aerial photographs have been produced at intervals of a few years in order to document the current state of the glacier.
